About butter sticks
A solid stick of butter has a density near 0.96 g/ml, so a US cup, or two sticks, is about 226 g. Whipped butter is a different animal: it is beaten with air and can occupy 30β40% more volume, meaning a whipped cup falls well short of a solid one by weight.
In the US, butter is sold in sticks: a standard stick is 1/2 cup = 8 tablespoons = 4 ounces = 113 grams = 1/4 pound. The wrapper is printed with tablespoon marks so you can cut what a recipe needs. "Stick" is a US packaged unit β outside the US, butter is usually sold by weight (grams), so recipes there give butter in grams rather than sticks.
Butter sticks β FAQs
How many sticks of butter is 1 cup?
2 sticks — each stick of butter is 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons, 4 ounces, 113 grams). So 1 cup = 2 sticks = 16 tablespoons = 226 grams.
How many tablespoons are in a stick of butter?
8 tablespoons. A stick is 1/2 cup, and there are 16 tablespoons in a cup, so half a cup is 8 tablespoons.
Does salted butter weigh the same as unsalted?
For these conversions, yes: a stick of salted or unsalted butter is the same 1/2 cup / 113 grams. The small amount of added salt doesn't meaningfully change the volume-to-weight ratio, so use the same numbers for both.
Do the stick and density-based cup weights agree?
Yes. A stick is a packaged unit (113 g), and the density-based value for a cup of butter (about 226 g) matches two sticks within rounding.
